Infinity Ward Goes With Comedy In New Trailer…Or Do They?

Posted on Saturday, October 31st, 2009 by andrew lao

I assume Infinity Ward meant to humor us game playing folk with their latest PSA trailer about Grenade Spamming.

Here’s a link to video which i’m considering NSFW:  (unfortunately i have no idea how to embed the video to the site so i beg of you to watch the short video and come back to read the article) Modern Warfare 2 Grenade Spam PSA

Obviously, it was intended to appear humorous, but to some it comes off lame and disgusting.

This video encourages the exact reason why i choose not to use my headset while playing online.  Any type of name calling gets old and by any degree, it’s hateful. Because it is a respectable company who make fine games releasing this video, i find it hard to accept this as just poorly executed comedy.  If it were any other Joe making some random video, i wouldn’t care, which is sad that i’ve become so immune to such acts, but to have IW stoop to this level of negativity is gross and counter active.  Here are some opinions on the matter i found through the net:

Kotaku reader Nickux from the comment section of the story:

“Oh man- this is such a shame. Infinity Ward is not only condoning hate speech with that acronym- they’re perpetuating the xbox-live typical douchebag mindset. It’s enough to make me not want to buy this game. I was really looking forward to playing it too but not if assholes are marketing it. It won’t make a difference if I don’t buy it, I realize, but I’m stunned they would do this. That’s like using the n-word in an ad it’s just abhorrent.”

Lono from his post on Sarcastic Gamer:

“I can’t believe that a company such as Infinity Ward would put a video out that basically condones the use of the word “fag” by every douche bag on Xbox Live.

As if the anonymous hate  it isn’t bad enough, Infinity Ward?  Now you’re basically saying it’s okay to call people Fags?  I highly doubt that was your intention, but come on… Are you kidding me? It would be like using an acronym that spelled a derogatory word for a Black person or Asian or Jewish person. I could see something like this done by some dumbass fan site, but seriously.

Stuff like this simply shouldn’t be produced by a company like Infinity Ward.  Is the controversy worth it? I don’t think so.”

Phil Kollar of Game Informer tweets:

“FAGS? Pussies? Seriously, Infinity Ward? This makes me want to not purchase MW2 way more than any other controversy”

It’s disappointing to see that this will be the biggest game this year as the game’s developers, Infinity Ward, seems to condones the use of hateful speech.  But to be honest, i’m more offended that Infinity Ward found calling people “pussies” and “cleverly” using the word FAGS as an acronym funny.  Like most, i still plan to buy Modern Warfare 2, but if there’s one thing we should take away from this it’s the perspective of how video games are looked at.  Childish.
