E3 2009: Hands-On Impressions – Bayonetta

Posted on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 by andrew lao

GR goes hands-on Bayonetta. The game, not the girl.

When I started playing Bayonetta, I thought, “I could never date this girl.” First of all, she’s basically a one woman angel killing nudist army. Her hair is so long that she uses it as a full body suit AND a melée weapon. You read correctly, her hair is a weapon and a suit, so when she’s beating the hell out of angels with her hair, she’s undressing herself at the same time.

Along with her gross long hair weapon/suit, Bayonetta also uses a gun, which she can equip on her hands or feet. If that wasn’t enough, she is so well versed in fighting that she can pick up her enemies weapon and use it like a pro. Now, do you see why i wouldn’t want to date her?

Yes, she kicks ass and strips at your control, but is Bayonetta any good? From the demo at E3, its very much “so far so good”. Any fan of modern brawlers like God Of War, God Hand, and Devil May Cry will probably take liking to Bayonetta, that is if you don’t mind the character. She is different in many ways, and she is a woman, but that hardly bothers me. And i don’t mean that in a demeaning way. From what i have seen, she is as strong as she is sexy, it just depends how she will be represented in the final product during narritive sections.

Bayonetta was created by Hideki Kamiya, and it plays just as DMC did. You can mash buttons and look good, but there is a depth you can explore if you want to be a more effective player. When fighting, Bayonetta’s actions are high on style and full of impact. Posing in unnecessary ways while shooting her guns, posting a giant bow as a pole and swinging around to take out enemies like a murderous Exotic Dancer, Bayonetta is looking to be this ridiculous.  But from a control stand point, it feels responsive and naturual in action.

The game is there, all Bayonetta needs is a plausible story, crazy boss fights and replayability, and this is sure to be a hit with the critics. We will save judgement when it ships to retailers on September 9th.  And now, i leave you with this picture:
